1.12.1. Competences
General competences:
-G1. Students must be able to develop an analytical view of reality, using the basic theoretical assumptions, methods and techniques of the discipline.
-G2. Students must be able to express and transmit clearly and adequately complex ideas, problems and solutions, both orally and in writing, to a specialized and non-specialized audience, using the tools provided by the social sciences.
-G3. Students must be able to search, select, analyze and synthesize relevant information, working with documental evidence; and thus to be able to formulate judgments based on real facts from the perspective of a personal reflection. This includes becoming familiar with new technologies applied to knowledge and communication.

1.12.2. Learning outcomes

1.12.3. Course objectives
The objectives of the course are to analyze in depth political issues that are in the current political agenda but cannot always receive enough attention in other courses. The study of these issues will be done through the confrontation of different views. Students are expected to adopt a participative attitude and to make use of the English language in every moment.
1.13. Course contents
The topics that will be dealt with during the course will be related to issues such as the changes observed in certain political actors or institutions, the analysis of the most recent electoral processes, the changes in the forms of political participation, the definition of public policies or international conflicts. Both national, European and international political issues will be dealt with.

The readings for each session will be made available via Moodle before each class. All materials will be in English.

3. Evaluation procedures and weight of components in the final grade
3.1. Regular assessment
Continuous evaluation:
It is compulsory to do:
- Short essay (post): 35% of the final evaluation.
- Short presentation in class: 15% of the final evaluation.
- In the sessions (announced in Moodle) short tests on the readings and class contents will be conducted. It is compulsory to do 80% of these tests foreseen for this course. The best 5 results of these tests will be used to compute the average result. This result will conform the 50% of the final evaluation of the subject.
- Those students that join the course later will have to justify their late registration. The same evaluation conditions apply to them as to the rest of the students.
final test:
There will be no final test for those students that have passed the course through the continuous evaluation system. Those who do not pass it, there will be a second chance to pass it (see below).
final grade:
35%: Post.
15%: Short presentation
50%: Short tests.
A “not graded” note will appear in those cases where the student:
- has not taken part in any of the activities subject to be graded
- has taken part in the activities of the course but do not meet the minimum requirements to have a second chance to take the test
- meet all the requirements to take the test but don’t take it.
In case of dishonest behaviour, the possibility of “not graded” is excluded.

3.2. Resit
- Second chance to take the exam:
Pre-requisites to be able to have a second chance to take the exam
Students need to have obtained, at least, a grade of 4 through the system of continuous evaluation.
A test and an essay based on the class contents and the compulsory readings.
In case the students don’t reach the minimum requirements to take the test or, even if they do, they do not take the test, no grade will be assigned. A “not graded” note will appear in their grades’ certificate.
In case of dishonest behaviour, the possibility of “not graded” is excluded.
